Thinking of buying a used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?

The style of the car

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a sleek five-door hatchback that is stylish and practical. Well designed and finished to a very high standard it looks great and is packed with premium appeal. Roomy and well-equipped, it’s also an eye-catching family car choice.

How it drives

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is fun to drive thanks to its rear-wheel drive set-up and range of powerful engines, which all deliver strong performance. The BMW is comfortable and quiet over long distances, while relatively compact dimensions and standard parking sensors make it simple to park. The smooth automatic gearbox is great if you spend lots of time in town. There are also four-wheel drive xDrive versions which means driving in snow and ice will be a breeze.

The interior

The five-door 4 Series Gran Coupe is a medium-sized five seater. There’s plenty of seat movement for the driver to adjust and those in the back get good legroom, although the small middle rear seat is best reserved for short journeys. A large hatchback boot door gives access to a generous luggage space  that’ll take three medium-sized suitcases. The well laid out dashboard is easy to use and features an intuitive infotainment system. Entry-level SE models get sat nav, leather seats and Bluetooth connectivity, while the Sport and M Sport versions add various enhancements such as sports seats and a metal finish for the pedals.

Running costs and reliability

Costing a similar amount to buy as its rivals but with more standard equipment, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is good value. And while its engines provide plenty of power they’re actually slightly more efficient than most, delivering excellent fuel economy and low tax rates. Pre-paid servicing packages help keep maintenance costs down, while reliability is a traditional BMW strength. Safety is strong, with the 4 Series Gran Coupe getting plenty of hi-tech driver aids. Euro NCAP haven’t tested this particular BMW model, but they awarded the closely related BMW 3 Series with the maximum five stars.

How it compares with similar cars

The 4 Series Gran Coupe is a similar size to the BMW 3 Series, but it sits lower and features a hatchback boot. The BMW is more fun to drive than the Audi A5 Sportback and four-door Mercedes CLA and it’s more spacious than the latter.
