The style of the car
The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (or 6GT for short) is a large hatchback that’s about the same size as BMW’s 7 Series luxury saloon. It replaced the older 5 Series Gran Turismo when it was launched in 2017. The 6GT is a big, tall car, but its sloping roof gives quite a sleek look. Its height means the seats are mounted higher off the ground, so sitting in it feels a bit like you’re in a crossover or SUV. The interior looks good, is user-friendly and comes packed with tech.
How it drives
The 6GT is extremely comfortable and relaxing to drive. It doesn’t feel as sporty as some other BMW models, but it’s very smooth and comfortable. The 6GT’s size means driving in town and parking needs some care, but parking sensors and cameras make manoeuvring more manageable. Powerful petrol and diesel engines are available. Both are very responsive so you can accelerate rapidly or just ease along at low speeds. All models have an automatic gearbox and the most powerful have four-wheel drive.
The interior
The 6GT is a large hatchback with five doors and five seats. It’s about the same size as the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class. There’s limousine-like room in the 6GT’s interior – five adults fit comfortably. The boot’s enormous, too, with space for five large suitcases. So it could be ideal if you want a large and luxurious family car that isn’t an SUV. The leather seats are very comfortable and everyone gets a great view out. There’s a lot of standard equipment including climate control, smartphone connectivity, sat nav, cruise control and LED headlights.
Running costs
The 6GT gives relatively good fuel economy for a car of this size. According to official figures, petrol models give around 30mpg to 40mpg and diesels give up to 57mpg. Road tax and insurance costs are reasonable, too. Safety experts Euro NCAP gave the 6GT a full five-star rating.
How it compares with similar cars
No other car is exactly like the 6GT – a large hatchback with the passenger space of a limousine, the boot space of an estate and the seating position of an SUV. Think of it as a large, luxurious family car and rivals include estates like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and SUVs like the Land Rover Discovery. In that company, it’s a great option, especially if you want to stand out from the crowd.
