Thinking of getting a Kia e-Niro?

The style of the car

The Kia e-Niro is the all-electric version of Kia’s Niro SUV. It looks almost identical to hybrid-powered Niro models, but has a covered front grille and a few other minor styling changes. It’s about the same size as SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai and Seat Ateca but it’s a bit lower and not as chunky-looking.

How it drives

The e-Niro is very easy to drive and feels reassuringly solid on the road. It’s relatively compact and the driver has a good view out, so nipping around town and manoeuvring into parking spaces is no hassle. All models have parking sensors and cameras. There is a low-power version of the e-Niro, but the more powerful 64kWh model is much more common. Both versions rapidly accelerate up to motorway speeds, and the higher-powered version is quite a quick car overall. With just a whisper of noise from the electric motor and a smooth ride, the e-Niro is quiet and comfortable on any road. Looking for an electric car? Here are our top 10 best used electric cars.

The interior

The e-Niro is a compact SUV with five doors and five seats that’s about the same size as the Nissan Qashqai. There’s generous space for four adults, or three children can fit across the back seat. The boot’s a very good size for this kind of car, with room for a week’s worth of family holiday luggage. The back seat folds down for more space and there’s lots of storage cubbies dotted around the interior. All e-Niro models come with air con, smartphone connectivity and cruise control.

Running costs

According to official figures, the entry-level e-Niro with a 39kWh battery has a range of 180 miles on a full charge, which should be enough for drivers who tend to do short journeys. The more powerful 64kWh model has a range of 282 miles, which is more than most of its rivals offer. An 80% recharge from a public 50kW outlet takes around 75 minutes. Plug in at home and it’ll fully recharge in about 10 hours. Costs depend on which public charger providers you use and which domestic electricity tariff you’re on. Road tax is free and insurance costs are low.

How it compares with similar cars

There’s a growing number of electric compact SUVs, including the Hyundai Kona Electric and Peugeot e-2008. The e-Niro has been around much longer, but it still offers a combination of long range and practicality that can’t really be beaten.
